07 November 2006 Winter travellers warned of invalidating cover
Holidaymakers heading abroad for activity-based winter pursuits have been urged to ensure they do not invalidate their cover, such as annual travel insurance, through drink or drug use.
Research by price comparison company moneysupermarket.com stated that 16 per cent of skiers had not purchased specialist cover for winter sports, while 12 per cent had not purchased any travel insurance at all.
The company also warned holidaymakers that being under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants may invalidate their single-trip or annual holiday insurance.
Peter Gerrard, researcher at moneysupermarket.com, said: "Virtually every travel insurance policy on the market includes a clause that says if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time an accident occurred, you may not be able to make a claim as your policy may be rendered invalid."
He added that holidaymakers should be wary of drinking alcohol and engaging in winter sporting activities soon after.
Earlier this year, AA Financial Services also warned that single or multi trip insurance may be invalidated for incidents relating to alcohol abuse.
