22 May 2007 Travellers 'unsure what insurance covers'
Many Britons travelling abroad are not sure what is covered by their travel insurance policy, it has been reported, with many not taking the time to check the details of their protection before setting off abroad.
Recently published research from HSBC reveals that 55 per cent of Britons are not aware of the exact details of their policy, while 27 per cent will set off on their journey without going over the details of their cover.
Michael Oliver, head of current accounts at the bank, said: "Our research shows that one in five people get their travel insurance as a benefit from their current account or credit card, rather than a policy that is researched and purchased on an annual basis or with specific holiday plans in mind."
He added that while most people will not knowingly travel abroad without the protection of a single or multi trip insurance policy, some will unwittingly be unprotected by their packaged insurance deal.
The firm reports that its own current account deal offers comparable protection to standalone single trip or annual travel insurance.
In May 2006, the Post Office reported that 22 per cent of travellers aged 18-24 were prepared to take as short break abroad without any cover, with the firm recommending the purchase of annual travel insurance to ensure adequate financial protection on a number of short trips.
