27 September 2006 Travellers given tips on carbon neutral flights
Holidaymakers wanting to take multiple trips each year with their annual travel insurance who have concerns about the impact of their flights on the environment are being informed of affordable carbon-offsetting schemes.
Barclays Bank has announced a partnership with carbon offsetting organisation Climate Care to offer UK holidaymakers the ability to easily offset the carbon used in a trip abroad.
Climate Care operates a number of projects to reduce and counteract carbon emissions in Bangladesh, Honduras, India, Kazakhstan, St Lucia and Uganda.
Karthryn Mintoft, environmental manager at Barclays, said: "Carbon neutral flights really need not cost the earth. Offsetting a flight to New York costs around £12.
"It's so easy and cheap for everyone to get involved, that it could really take off."
Carbon offsetting works by calculating the carbon emission per person in a flight and making a financial contribution to schemes to counteract the effect by preventing an equivalent emission elsewhere in the world.
Earlier this year Climate Care launched the Climatesure travel insurance brand, which combines travel cover with a carbon offsetting contribution.
