03 June 2006 Travellers continue to head into Europe
Arrivals of travellers and tourists into Europe, many of whom were covered by annual travel insurance, were up four per cent in 2005 from 2004, according to figures from the European Travel Commission's (ETC's) second annual report.
The report shows that Europe continued to dominate the world travel market with 18 million arrivals in 2005, with growing numbers of travellers using their multi-trip travel insurance and increasingly heading to destinations such as Turkey, Latvia, Greece and Monaco, travel site Boarding.no reports.
Rob Franklin, executive director of ETC, commented: "France still leads in terms of arrivals, ahead of Spain, Italy, the UK and Germany, but it takes second place to Spain in the international receipts' ranking."
Figures show that tourists, both with single trip and annual travel insurance policies, despite concerns over international terrorism and the possibilities of bird flu, continued to travel in 2005.
Projections from the World Tourism Organisation also show that visitor numbers are expected to increase by two to three per cent in 2006.
While many will flock to Europe for the World Cup in Germany this summer, a survey by American Express predicts that many Britons have planned a European trip this summer, perhaps using their annual holiday insurance, to escape the football fever.
