24 June 2006  Travellers beware of shopping abroad
Holidaymakers planning to make the most of shopping opportunities whilst overseas this year should be aware that there are limits in place on what can be brought into the country, HM Revenue and Customs is warning.

Whether covered by an annual travel insurance or not, there are certain goods which must be declared, such as food, plants and seeds coming in from outside the EU, as well as expensive items, such as designer clothes or electrical goods, which may have extra duty or tax slapped on them.

Francis Taylor of HM Revenue and Customs said: "If you are in any doubt, go through the red channel when you return. If you are bringing something back you shouldn't, you will be treated with more sympathy."

M&S Money's commercial director, David Mackay, also warns annual travellers that if they didn't pay duty on their holiday souvenirs they may not be insured.

However, Samantha Downes of the Guardian, commented: "Travel insurance policies should cover the goods between the time they are purchased and returning home, so you can make a claim if they are lost, stolen or damaged either at your hotel or in transit."

HM Revenue and Customs' website states that you are likely to be questioned if you are carrying more than 3200 cigarettes or 200 cigars, 110 litres of beer, 90 litres of wine, or more than ten litres of spirits.
