13 December 2006 Travellers advised on exotic ski locations
While winter sports fans with annual travel insurance may be tempted to travel to exotic destinations this winter to ski, they are being advised that they could face "significant" medical costs in the event of injury if they are not adequately covered.
Travellers heading to locations such as Chile and Japan have been reminded that they will not be covered by their European Health Insurance Card, making it especially important to ensure they are protected by single or multi trip insurance.
Joanne Field, marketing manager at American Express Travel Insurance, said: "Medical and repatriation costs outside Europe can be very high - literally tens of thousands of pounds.
"Air ambulance repatriation from Japan can cost 40 per cent more than the USA."
She added that injuries as a result of winter sports occur frequently and stressed the need for sufficient cover.
Last month the Post Office reported that winter sports trips are "great fun", but more risky than a beach holiday and urged holidaymakers heading to the slopes to purchase single trip or annual travel insurance.
