28 February 2006 Travel insurance need for snowsports holidays
Cold weather and an increase in snowsports during the winter months lead to a greater number of wrist fractures, the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in Manhattan reports.
According to HSS, wrist fractures are most commonly caused by falls onto an outstretched hand, often resulting from slipping on ice and skiing and snowboarding injuries.
Dr Scott Wolfe, attending orthopaedic surgeon and chief of the hand service at HSS, warned that detecting and treating broken bones can be a difficult and time consuming experience, highlighting the need for those taking a holiday in much colder climates to cover themselves with annual travel insurance.
"The wrist is a complex, unique and important joint," said Dr. Wolfe.
"Many fractures may go undetected and remain un-united for weeks or months."
HSS warns that it could take diagnostic tools such as physical examination and imaging techniques like X-ray, bone scan and MRI to determine the extent of the injury, proving costly for those who injure themselves on winter sports holidays without travel insurance.
