22 March 2007 Taekwondo programmes launched for tourists in South Korea
Holidaymakers travelling to Asia this year wanting to learn the Korean martial art of Taekwondo will be able to take advantage of a new cultural programme launched in the country to enable tourists to learn more about the sport and self-defence art form.
Starting this week and running until December 2007, the Gyeonghuigung Palace in Seoul will host 90-minute lessons six days a week, three times a day, with no lessons given on Monday.
Those more interested in the aesthetic pleasures of the martial art rather than engaging in its practical exertions can relax and watch the Kukkiwon Takewondo demonstration team and traditional folk-dance group give a performance at the same venue from Wednesdays to Saturdays.
"Whether you are a black belt or a beginner, young or old, participating in and watching Taekwondo is a healthy, dynamic and exciting sport," the tourist department of the Seoul metropolitan government reports.
Taekwondo has its roots in the taekkyon form of subak unarmed combat used by fighters for the rival Goguryeo, Silla and Baekje kingdoms in ancient Korea.
