08 July 2006 Summer holidays stretch family budgets Families could spend as much as £600 pounds keeping their offspring entertained this summer, according to new figures from Abbey.
Working parents are expected to spend around £50 per child per week of the six-week school holidays on childcare arrangements, in addition to their family holiday and travel insurance expenses.
Nearly a third of parents questioned stated that they will spend up to £150 per week on their children while on holiday abroad, with ten per cent admitted to spending as much as £400 on keeping the kids entertained each week while overseas.
Abbey's Head of Savings Reza Attar-Zadeh: "Our survey shows just how financially stretched parents can be over the school holidays, both in terms of finances and time.
"Many will be beholden to family and friends, while others have to make alternative childcare arrangements or cut down their working hours, both of which can have a significant financial impact."
The survey also showed that 32 per cent of parents rely on their savings to pay for summer holiday expenses, although savings can be made by taking out an annual travel insurance policy, which will cover all trips taken throughout the year.
