29 March 2007 'Smart' sunglasses presented at conference
Holidaymakers frustrated with the limitations of existing photochromic lenses available for sunglasses could be interested in the recent prototype launch of a new type of variable lenses for sunglasses and goggles.
The University of Washington presented the new "smart" glasses that alter both shade and colour using negligible power at a national meeting of the American Chemical Society.
Chunye Xu, research assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Washington, said: "These lenses are more active, more intelligent, than today's sunglasses."
She added that as a result of the materials used in the glasses, the price should not be too dissimilar to that of photchromic sunglasses currently on the market.
The sunglasses use eletrochromic materials to change transparency depending on the electric current run through the lenses.
Last September, annual travel insurance provider Direct Line reported that sunglasses were the second-most commonly lost items for Britons on holiday, accounting for 23 per cent of claims for lost baggage with the firm.
