29 October 2005 Skiers warned to have adequate insurance With the ski season fast approaching a leading insurer has called on travellers to ensure that they have the correct insurance.
For those travelling throughout the year, including hot summer holidays as well as a break away skiing around wintertime, multi-trip travel insurance can offer peace of mind for year-long cover.
Posing a variety of potential dangers, an accident on a skiing holiday could end up costing the injured person far more than they appreciated.
Joanne Field, marketing manager for American Express Travel Insurance warned: "Many winter sports injuries have to be air-lifted from the slopes and repatriated back to the UK, an additional expense that could cost up to £10,000 if uninsured.
"Without valid travel insurance you would also not be covered for other significant risks such as lost luggage, delays or stolen property."
Particular problems could face those planning on snowboarding rather than skiing; Ms Field said that snowboarders were six times more likely to have an accident than skiers, and are more likely to injure ankles, feet, hands and wrists.
According to Ms Field, 95,000 wrists are broken each season and dislocated shoulders account for 55 per cent of all accidents, highlighting the very serious need for annual travel insurance.
