28 June 2006 Portugal tops search engine poll
Portugal and Portuguese destinations are the most searched resorts by those booking holidays online, according to reports released today.
Consumers preparing for their holidays by booking flights, hotels and annual travel insurance online are increasingly searching for Portuguese destinations, suggests Holidays Direct.
Spain came second in the number of online searches carried out, though it did receive the most number of UK visitors.
Paul Reeve of Holidays Direct commented: "Search terms are clearly not the most reliable way of estimating bookings - there's quite a difference.
"We have found that people booking holidays in Spain, Turkey and particularly Greece are much more likely to come to the site from a general route and be influenced by a special offer when come into the site."
The findings come as one expert suggests that annual travel insurance might be cheaper than buying separate policies for each trip abroad.
Peter Gerrard, analyst at Insuresupermarket, told readers of the Independent that it is best to seek annual travel insurance policies from several insurers and to avoid high street banks when seeking holiday cover.
