15 June 2007 Passport fees to go up from October
The Identity and Passport Service has announced that the fee charged for passports is to be raised on October 4th this year as a result of increasing costs of its consular element.
Added by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), the consular premium relates to the costs involved in providing assistance to Britons encountering problems when abroad.
The government reports that this charge has increased in line with rising numbers of travellers to enable the FCO to maintain current levels of service.
Lord Triesman, foreign office minister, said: "British nationals make an estimated 65 million overseas trips a year.
"The majority of these, thankfully, are trouble free, but occasionally things do go wrong."
He added that consular officials are the first port of call to provide Britons who are a victim of crime, sickness or other unexpected misfortunes abroad.
In July 2006 myCallcredit advised holidaymakers to keep their passport securely locked away in a hotel safe, together with single or annual travel insurance documents and other vital paperwork.
