04 October 2005 Passengers die in tourist boat A total of 21 passengers lost their lives yesterday when a tourist boat sank in New York State.
The boat, the Ethan Allen, had been carrying mainly Canadian tourists on Lake George, when it is thought to have hit the wake of a larger vessel and overturned.
The group consisted of pensioners and wheelchair users, and was only 50m from the shore west side of the lake.
Warren County Sheriff Larry Cleveland told local media: "We believe and we have not confirmed that they hit the wake of one of the larger cruise boats and it overturned and upset the boat and threw the passengers into the water."
Lake George, is popular with tourists and well placed for excursions from the local Adirondack mountains, and Albany, the capital of New York State.
The lake is about 200 miles north of New York City.
