21 January 2006 One in five skiers 'not protected' on holiday
British skiers are seriously putting themselves at risk by not taking out an annual travel insurance policy, according to a report by thisismoney.co.uk.
Although 1.2 million Britons went on a skiing holiday in 2005, the report found that just one in five of this number bought a travel insurance policy.
Roughly £400 on average is claimed by skiers for problems during their holiday, while a third of these claims are for medicinal purposes.
The report also found that many people booking skiing holidays will automatically take out the insurance policy offered by their tour operator or travel agent, rather than shopping around to find what could be a cheaper policy elsewhere.
Karen Preston, travel insurance manager at Sainsbury's Bank, advised: "This is one of the busiest times for holiday bookings, but as people get excited about choosing where to go they can overlook the importance of the right travel insurance. Many could make a substantial saving by buying an annual policy."
Based on the report's findings, shopping around for a multi-trip annual travel insurance policy, checking the small print to ensure exactly what is entailed and whether there is any excess to pay has been advised.
