02 December 2005 New security checks for American airports Tourists travelling to America may find themselves the subject of new screening procedures introduced to tackle terrorism.
Regular holiday makers taking advantage of their annual travel insurance may have become accustomed to the checks at departures, including bag searches, 'pat-downs' and heel checks.
But as of December 20th this year, travellers will now face a new type of random search designed to deter terrorists from developing ways to circumnavigate the security checks, reports the New York Times.
The Transportation Security Administration is to announce the new procedures tomorrow, which are set to include random searches lasting two minutes, carry-on bags being physically searched and the screening of the entire body rather than just the upper torso.
"We don't want the predictability of the system to be used against us," said Yolanda L. Clark, a security agency spokeswoman.
"So we are introducing an element of randomness that makes it more difficult to manipulate."
The plans have been met with a mixed reaction in the US, as some security experts and members of Congress have praised them while others see the measures as being counter productive.
