16 May 2007 New deal on European call rates 'marks significant progress'
Holidaymakers making regular phone calls back to Britain on their breaks, such as those with annual travel insurance, may be pleased to hear of the preliminary deal struck between phone companies and the European Parliament on roaming charges.
Financial services comparison firm moneysupermarket.com reports that call charges from EU countries to the UK have from between 55 and 94 pence per minute to 34 pence per minute.
However, it states that these new call charges are still "unfair" when compared to the 3-10 pence per minute charged for mobile phone calls to landlines within the UK.
Rob Barnes, head of mobile phones at the firm, said: "Networks are hiding behind the defence of having to pay other European operators to carry calls in the relevant countries, yet providers such as T Mobile and Deutsche Telekom are the same company, as are Orange and France Telecom."
He expressed concern that mobile phone users will be forced to pay increased charges in other areas to offset this arrangement while adding that those travelling to non-EU states will not be directly affected by this deal.
Last month, uSwitch reported that the monthly phone bill of a Briton abroad increased by an average of £12.75 when they travel overseas.
