28 August 2007 Nearly two million Britons 'head abroad on Bank Holiday'
Almost two million Britons took advantage of the recent bank holiday weekend to get away from it all, it has been claimed, with sunny destinations and city breaks leading the list of holiday choices.
The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) reports that around 1.9 million Britons planned to get away during the weekend, with thousands of holidaymakers flying from airports all over the country or taking the Eurostar to the continent.
City breaks to New York and Amsterdam retained their popularity, as did journeys to sunny Mediterranean resorts in Spain and the Canary Islands.
Justin Fleming, president of Abta, said: "The August bank holiday is our traditional farewell to the summer and after three months of rain it is no surprise that thousands of us are heading abroad to catch some sun and relax."
Britons who elected to stay in the country for the bank holiday would have benefited from warmer weather than has been experienced for much of the summer, with temperatures over 20 degrees Celsius reported in the south of the country.
