11 January 2007 'Nearly half' of Brits favour more environmentally-friendly travel
Increasing numbers of British travellers, such as those with annual travel insurance, are intending to take measures to reduce the environmental impact of their travel.
multi trip insurance provider Halifax reports that 26 per cent of Britons will take more holidays in the UK, rather than travel abroad, while others will use trains or ferries instead of flying.
Additionally, a tenth of Britons will reduce the number of holiday air miles they take each year, while around the same number are considering contributing financially to a carbon-offsetting scheme.
David Rochester, head of pricing at Halifax Travel Insurance, said: "It is encouraging that nearly half of Britain's holidaymakers are proactively planning to minimise their own holiday carbon footprints."
He added that more work was necessary to educate and convince more members of the public of the need to be aware of the impact of their holidays on the environment.
Last year, Halifax Travel Insurance warned that by 2030, the effects of climate change could result in a shift in trends of holiday destinations away from the Mediterranean to northern Europe.
