08 June 2007 Mobile phone roaming costs 'will be slashed'
Following a decision by the Telecoms Council to approve plans to cut the price of roaming fees for mobile phones across the EU, it has been confirmed that prices will indeed fall in Europe.
However, price comparison firm SimplySwitch notes that this capping of prices is not due to be completely implemented until the end of the summer, meaning that many UK-based holidaymakers could still be paying too much for calls.
Karen Darby, founder of the company, said: "The caps only apply within the EU, the biggest reductions won't be seen for three years and the price restrictions won't take effect until many people have been on their summer break."
She added that despite these setbacks, it is "encouraging" to observe such swift action from the European Parliament without decision-making being embroiled in bureaucracy.
Meanwhile, mobile phone network 3 has claimed that its customers are already benefiting from reduced call charges to Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Italy and Sweden through the use of its 3 Like Home service.
