17 January 2007 Mobile phone firm 'throws gauntlet on international calls
Travellers that go abroad many times a year, such as those with multi trip insurance, could benefit from a recent decision by mobile telephone firm 3.
Launching its 3 Like Home tariff, the firm allows customers visiting a number of countries, including Australia, Hong Kong and Denmark, to use their existing call, text and data bundles with an affiliated sister network of the company, without additional charges.
Furthermore, those taking advantage of this deal will not be charged to receive calls.
"Unlike other mobile operators who charge customers a one-off fee or monthly subscription to access better calling rates to and avoid roaming charges ... 3 Like Home will automatically apply when customers are on any of 3's sister networks," the company reports.
Last summer, annual travel insurance provider Norwich Union reported that 93 per cent of holidaymakers aged 18-24 would take a mobile phone with them on their travels, while 22 per cent of the claims it deals with are for lost or stolen belongings.
