30 March 2006 Mexico back on top form for tourists
Tourists with travel insurance are flocking back to Mexico according to the country's latest tourism figures which show it currently has 83 per cent occupation in its 53,000 hotel beds and foreign tourist numbers have risen to 22 million, since Hurricane Wilma hit the Caribbean coast last October.
The restoration of the resort of Cancun, which is visited every year by people with multi-trip travel insurance, has been heralded as a great success by the secretary general of the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), Francesco Frangialli, and it has been suggested that other countries facing such threats could learn from Mexico, Travelbite reports.
Mr Frangialli commented: "It is clear to see the impressive progress that has already been made, demonstrating that Cancun and Mexico's other Caribbean destinations have made a speedy recovery in restoring the levels of quality and services that have made this one of the world's leading tourist destinations."
Mexico's many historic sites and archaeological and architectural monuments, a number of which have World Heritage status, have also benefited from the speedy redevelopment and are once again being visited by tourists armed with annual travel insurance.
The country has a very long, rich history which flourished from 1200 BC until 1521 AD with Mexico's first inhabitants setting up home there around 20,000 years before the Spaniards arrived in 1519.
