14 October 2005  Mediterranean ferry strike comes to an end
A 24-day strike by workers on the SNCM ferry company linking Corsica to mainland France ended on Thursday after union members voted to end their industrial action.

The dispute has highlighted the need for travel insurance to protect against delays and missed departures as the strike was only called of after the French government threatened to declare the firm bankrupt.

The strikers voted by an overwhelming 519 to 73 to go back to work.

Many tourists have been trapped on the Mediterranean island as the 10-vessel fleet was forced to stay in port.

Union officials said it would take at least 48 hours to get the ferries back to normal service.
