02 March 2007 Mackay region receives tourism grant
The State of Queensland, Australia has announced that the Mackay region is to receive a special grant from the Australian government in order to boost tourism to the area.
Funding to the value of AU$80,000 is being donated to the region to help bring a regional coal trail to the area and construct a riverfront precinct in the city.
The money is part of a AU$1 million fund granted to regional tourism organisations each year.
Margaret Keech, tourism minister, said: "I congratulate Mackay Tourism on receiving the grant based on a submission dedicated to developing local tourism."
She added that the government funding would enable the development of a number of local tourism experiences for visitors to the region.
Last November, holiday insurance provider Churchill speculated that by 2050, the introduction of hypersonic aircraft will reduce the flight time to Australia to less than six hours.
