16 August 2007 Lost baggage claims on the up There has been a massive increase in lost baggage claims for the first half of the year compared to that seen in 2006, it has been claimed.
Figures from annual travel insurance provider InsureandGo reveal an 85 per cent increase in claims filed for missing luggage, up to 2,094 for the period from January to June.
Analysis of statistics from the Association of European Airlines also shows a 22 per cent increase in the amount of bags lost for passengers on budget airlines, while the figures from the insurer include low-fare carriers.
Perry Wilson, managing director of the firm, said: "With the summer holiday season now in full swing, we can unfortunately expect more families' holidays to be ruined by lost baggage."
He added that while the company would do all it can to deal with problems as they arise, more must be done by airport authorities and airlines to prevent instances of lost baggage.
In May 2007, swiftcover.com reported that 55 per cent of passengers whose luggage has gone missing at airports have to wait over 24 hours for its return.
