16 September 2006 'Lifestyle hotels' on the up
Holidaymakers with annual travel insurance that go abroad several times a year may be staying in what has been dubbed 'lifestyle hotels', as a report finds their room capacity increasing.
PricewaterhouseCoopers has found that the top 25 European lifestyle hotels now have 11,386 rooms, a 5.9 per cent increase on a year ago.
The report defines these hotels as generally "small, contemporary and specialised", maintained that their differentiating factor is the sense of "personal belonging" they bestow on visitors, some of whom will be travelling with multi-trip insurance.
Liz Hall, head of hospitality research at PricewaterhouseCoopers, said: "While many larger hotel chains continue to try to emulate lifestyle hotels' distinctive offer, we found that the real action in terms of innovation and value for money is still being driven by the smaller operators."
She added that this was especially true in the "new, up-and-coming branded budget lifestyle segment".
The Keating lifestyle hotel, defining itself as "a statement of our time" is due to open this November in San Diego.
