30 November 2006 Insurer warns of medical expenses
An annual travel insurance provider has warned those going abroad on winter sports holidays of the high cost of medical treatment and associated costs in the event of broken limbs.
InsureandGo reports that within Europe the average cost of a broken arm is £2,000, rising to £7,500 in the USA. The maximum costs range from £10,000 in Europe to £25,000 in the USA.
Costs for fractured legs and vertebra are higher, going up to £100,000 for a broken vertebra incurred in the US.
Perry Wilson at InsureandGo noted that single or multi trip insurance can cover rescue and repatriation, in addition to standard medical bills.
"Repatriation can be expensive," he said, "for example, depending on your injury you may have to be transported home by stretcher or in business class to provide you with more room."
He added that the high costs of such travel or air ambulance in some emergencies mean it is essential that winter sports cover is purchased before trips abroad.
Post Office Financial Services recently noted that winter sports holidays carry more attendant risk than a beach break and also stressed the need for travel insurance before heading to the slopes.
