27 June 2007 Insurance regulation 'will protect those with long-term illnesses'
Government moves to put the sale of travel insurance bought as part of a package holiday under the regulatory overview of the Financial Services Authority (FSA) will result in improved protection for travellers with pre-existing medical conditions, it has been claimed.
annual travel insurance provider Direct Line reports that 91 per cent of Britons are in favour of regulating insurance sold in this manner, with the firm campaigning for this change since before the turn of the century.
Chris Price, head of travel insurance at Direct Line, said: "Regulation will bring much needed protection to people with potentially life-threatening conditions."
He added that this change will also bring equality to the market, with sellers of insurance as part of package holidays subject to the same regulator as firms selling standalone cover.
In October 2006, AA Financial Services reported that some travel agents have neglected to inform consumers that they must disclose any pre-existing medical conditions in order for their single or multi-trip travel insurance policy to remain valid.
