01 June 2007 India, Peru and Tanzania top gap year placement list
As the school year comes to an end, many students and others will be picking up their backpacker or annual travel insurance with the intension of an extended trip abroad, while recent research has listed the top placement countries for those planning on a full gap year overseas.
The study from the not-for-profit Year Out Group found that India, Peru and Tanzania were joint top of the 2007 list for gap year placements, with China and 2006's top ranked country South Africa filling out the top five.
Richard Oliver, chief executive of the company, said: "The number of individuals embarking on volunteering projects, expeditions, structured work placements, courses and cultural exchanges is on the increase."
He added that a gap year project that is properly structured is often well thought of by prospective employers and would enhance a CV.
Last August, multi trip insurance provider American Express reported that the weeks following the publication of A-level results often see a rise in the sale of gap year travel insurance policies.
