14 March 2007 Home Office launches 'eJumbo' passports
Frequent fliers planning on renewing their passports before heading abroad this year, including those with annual travel insurance, may now apply for a 48-page 'eJumbo' biometric passport, it has been announced.
The Home Office reports that this new passport adds 16 pages for visa stamps to the biometric security changes introduced last year.
John Ryan, Home Office minister, said: "I am delighted that following the very successful switchover from digital passports to the new generation of more secure biometric ePassports last year, the Identity and Passport Service is now offering frequent travellers the new jumbo 48-page ePassport."
He added that Britons are "seasoned travellers", noting that 80 per cent of the population holds a passport, with more passports issued in the UK than all countries worldwide, aside from the US.
Earlier this year the Identity and Passport Service reminded holidaymakers to keep their passports safe at all times, revealing that 290,996 were reported lost or stolen in 2006.
Research from the service found that 61 per cent of Britons neglect to fill out the contacts section at the back of their passport.
