20 August 2007 Holidaymakers warned over card charges
Britons heading abroad and making purchases or withdrawing cash on their debit and credit cards have been warned that they may be paying over the odds for these transactions.
Research from price comparison and switching firm uSwitch reveals that financial services providers have introduced or increased a range of charges on travelling cardholders.
These include foreign exchange loading fees from Liverpool Victoria and Lloyds TSB, foreign usage charges from HBOS and transaction fees from RBS and NatWest.
Mike Naylor, personal finance expert at the firm, said: "Holiday spending can be difficult enough to budget for at the best of times, without the bill creeping up by way of these hidden charges."
He added that with a little bit of time and effort, holidaymakers can make savings by researching the best deal, while frequent fliers with annual travel insurance may benefit from taking out a cared for exclusive use abroad.
Earlier this month, MoneyExpert estimated that the average debit card withdrawal overseas costs British holidaymakers £3.67 in charges.
