04 May 2007 Holidaymakers 'lose millions in unfair baggage charges'
UK holidaymakers set to travel abroad this Bank Holiday weekend may kick off their break with unwelcome additional baggage charges, it has been reported.
Travel agent Thomson estimates that during the weekend, approximately 60 per cent of 40,000 British passengers will check in their baggage and be over the 15 kg free limit.
It calculates that approximate fee for this excess baggage to be £1.2 million, in charges it describes as "unfair".
Derek Jones, sales director from Thomson, said: "We have been campaigning for transparent holiday pricing for some time now.
"When people are booking a holiday their luggage allowance is probably not at the top of their list."
He added that 15 kg is not an adequate baggage allowance for a week's holiday while noting that holidaymakers will often only be aware they are over the limit at the airport and have no choice but to pay the excess.
In October 2006, annual travel insurance provider Sainsbury's Bank reported that lost baggage, money or documents accounted for 13 per cent of claims seen by the company, while a further 11 per cent of claims were for cases of baggage being stolen.
