One in six holidaymakers has admitted to being inspired by books and films when choosing their holiday destinations, or deciding where to make the most of their annual travel insurance.
A poll of 10,000 American Express travel insurance customers revealed that books such as the Lord of the Rings, Captain Corelli's Mandolin and the recent Da Vinci Code were inspirations for travellers wanting to see the real life locations of their favourite stories.
Marketing manager for American Express insurance services, Joanne Field, said: "Thanks to the internet, low cost air fares and books such as the Da Vinci Code, we are all being inspired to travel more often both at home and abroad. We have seen our annual sales rise over the last three years and expect this trend to continue."
A recommendation from a friend or family is the biggest inspiration for choosing a holiday destination, for which multi-trip travel insurance will come in handy, with 58 per cent of holidaymakers choosing to take their advice.
The survey also showed travel programmes were less influential than newspaper travel articles which inspired 16 per cent of travel trips.
The movie of the Da Vinci Code, which stars Tom Hanks, Audrey Tautou, Ian McKellen and Jean Reno, was filmed in various historic locations including sites in England, Scotland and France.
