15 November 2006 High cost of medical treatment at ski resorts
The high expense of medical treatment at ski resorts means that travellers heading abroad to engage in winter sports should purchase a single trip or annual travel insurance policy that covers them for their activities, it has been claimed.
Research from Post Office Travel Service has found that the costs of treatment including helicopter and ambulance transport, outpatient treatment and repatriation can cost thousands of pounds, while inpatient treatment with surgery in the US can result in bills of up to £50,000.
Kevin McAdam, head of travel and leisure at the Post Office, said: "Although a winter sports holiday is great fun, it does carry more risk than a regular beach holiday and accidents are more likely to happen."
The Post Office added that travellers should ensure they are adequately covered for their winter sports activities when abroad, with add-on cover for sports being available on multi trip insurance policies.
Earlier this month, price comparison company moneysupermarket.com reported that 12 per cent of skiers travel without any single trip or annual travel insurance.
