25 February 2006 Heavy rains cause landslides in Maui Torrential rains have hit the Hawaiian island of Maui, causing a series of landslides.
The series of downpours forced the closure of highways in west Maui and east Maui, preventing residents from being able to drive to their jobs and tourists from travelling around the country.
Most highways affected were shut for roughly five hours.
One beachgoer at Fleming Beach Park reported that a large muddy plume of water washed down from a construction site into the sea, although other streams in the area are not believed to be running high enough for there to be a danger of flooding.
According to Maui News the rains were a result of a low-pressure system that moved across the island after generating severe flooding on the islands of Kauai and Oahu, emphasising the need for travellers to be protected by annual travel insurance should their holiday be ruined by unexpected bad weather.
