11 November 2005 Heathrow expansion set to benefit travellers A single state-of-the-art building which would be able to deal with 30 million passengers is under consideration for Heathrow Airport.
The British Airways Authority (BAA) announced today that the idea, called Heathrow East, would complement the Terminal five building, which is already under construction.
It is hoped that the work, which would begin in 2009, could be completed in time for the 2012 Olympics.
"We are excited by the idea of Heathrow East, but at the moment it is still just an idea," said Mick Temple, managing director of BAA Heathrow.
"Our vision is to create the world's greatest international hub airport in the world's greatest city."
If successful, BAA claim that passengers would benefit from the contemporary design and enhanced retail experience, while the environment would benefit from lower energy use.
Travellers keen to take advantage of their multi-trip travel insurance should be pleased with the news, as BAA claim that the development would make Heathrow one of the world's most attractive and easy to use airports.
