20 January 2006 'Greater funding' needed to prevent airline delays
Air passengers travelling throughout Europe may face severe delays and disruptions to their holidays unless heavy investment is placed in runways and terminals, according to a new study.
Eurocontrol, a Belgian-based organisation for the safety of air navigation, and the Airports Council International (ACI) found that the number of people travelling by plane is expected to grow by three per cent this year and is anticipated to reach 1.5 billion by 2020.
For those taking advantage of their annual travel insurance and making numerous trips, a lack of funding in airport expansion could add frustrating delays to their trips.
"If Europe's aviation industry is to tackle the capacity crisis then Europe's airports, air navigation service providers, airlines and manufacturers must work together," commented ACI's Europe director Roy Griffiths.
Modest investments in new taxis and runway exits could enable airports to squeeze 20 to 30 per cent more flights onto existing runways, reports the Times, although environmental and geographical issues may limit potential growth.
Milan Linate and Paris Le Bourget were named by Eurocontrol as being the European airports with the longest delays during 2005.
