05 October 2005 French transport strike causes mayhem
A one-day national strike is causing havoc in France as much of the transport system grinds to a halt.
Trade unions are protesting against government economic policies such as plans to privatise state firms.
The action has affected flights, with authorities expecting hundreds of short and medium-haul flights to be delayed.
Already in Gatwick, some flights have been delayed, while British Airways expects disruption to its French service.
Meanwhile, in Paris, only about half the metro system is in operation, and just a third of suburban trains are working coming into the French capital.
The unpredictable disruption to destinations that are frequented by business people and tourists alike shows how important annual, multi-trip travel insurance is.
Many other French cities are suffering too, with barely a single bus in Marseille in operation.
One of the firms that is to be sold off is the SNCM ferry company, which has already led to a week of problems in the south of France.
SNCM staff went on strike meaning that thousands of tourists have been stuck on the island of Corsica unable to get away.
