05 January 2007 First 2007 cruise ship reaches shores of Darwin
Britons currently on a cruise, including those with annual travel insurance, may have reached the shores of Darwin as the first cruise ship of 2007 carried 3,500 passengers and crew to the capital of the Northern Territory.
The Sapphire Princess is the first of an estimated 45 cruise ships to visit Darwin during 2007, Northern Territory Australia reports.
Paul Henderson, minister for tourism, said: "Darwin is rapidly earning a reputation as a great cruise destination."
"I commend Darwin City Council and Tourism Top End for working together to provide free shuttle bus services for passengers to the CBD [central business district]."
He added that the government would be building a new ship terminal as part of a plan to regenerate the Darwin Waterfront to provide better facilities for passengers.
Northern Territory News this week reported that an additional 14,000 backpackers, including those from the UK visited the Northern Territory in 2006.
Last year, multi-trip travel insurance provider More Than reported that the number of Britons travelling to Australia during the winter months had increased by 39 per cent since 2000.
