Parents are increasingly using their annual travel insurance to take their families further afield during the school holidays, according to new travel figures.
Online travel agent, Lastminute.com has revealed that destinations such as Kenya, Morocco and Gambia have now made it onto the top ten destination list, for trips taken in the summer half term holidays, the Telegraph reports.
Commenting on the new trend for parents, many of whom will ensure they are covered with travel insurance, to take more exotic trips with their kids, Lastminute.com's travel director, John Bevan, said the British are "well travelled and confident, so it stands to reason that the family market is following the overall trend."
Parents are warned however, even if they are covered by travel insurance, to consider the implications of taking their offspring to mosquito-infested destinations.
Founder of the website Travellingwithchildren.co.uk, Annie Jones, said: "I don't encourage people to take young children to places where there might be mosquitoes… it makes sense to wait until children are older before going anywhere with a risk of malaria."
To avoid insect bites which can lead to malaria and diseases such as yellow and dengue fever, travellers are recommended to cover up at night with long sleeves and trousers, to use repellent and if possible sleep under a mosquito net.
