08 December 2006 European markets voted top shopping destinations
UK shoppers have voted the traditional markets in Germany and France as the top shopping destination for Christmas, a survey by an annual insurance provider has revealed.
American Express Insurance Services reports that from October to December last year, Britons spent over £8 billion during over 11 million visits to the continent and one million trips to North America.
Joanne Field, marketing manager at the company, said: "Low cost air travel, the increased use of annual travel insurance and a strong pound has meant that Britons can literally shop last minute as easily in Paris or even New York as they can in London."
She added that many passengers intend to join their Christmas shopping with a holiday break, but warned that savings made abroad can be wiped out in the event of lost luggage.
The company noted that lost luggage was in the top three claims reported to American Express Travel Insurance, with the average claim being £580.
Earlier this year, the Royal Bank of Scotland reported that the strong pound was helping to maintain the popularity of trips to New York and Europe for Christmas shopping.
