22 June 2007 Eastern Europe proving popular
The eastern European nations of Poland, Bulgaria and Croatia are finding favour among travellers, reflected in the rise in currency sales noted by the Post Office.
With a 94 per cent rise in currency sales year-on-year, the Polish zloty leads the way, boosted by new routes added by low-cost airlines, the Post Office has said.
"Flights and accommodation are cheap and costs are low in cultural centres like Warsaw and Krakow, which have shed their communist cloaks to become vibrant modern cities," said the Post Office's head of travel services Kevin McAdam.
Sales of Bulgarian lev rose 43 per cent year-on-year, while Croatian kuna sales were up by 33 per cent.
Long-haul destinations are also proving more popular, with the research showing a 30 per cent rise in the Chinese yuan and an eight per cent rise in United Arab Emirates dirham sales.
Mr McAdam expects the market for Chinese yuan to "mushroom" with next year's Olympic Games, suggesting annual travel insurance could be useful if you intend to visit the sporting event as well as some of these other hotspots.
The Beijing Olympics will begin on August 8th 2008.
