07 June 2007 Different flight lengths 'result in different catering preferences'
A leading British airline has commented that passengers on long-haul flights and those on short-haul flights tend to have different catering preferences, with its own meals designed to accommodate this variation.
BMI notes that passengers on short-haul flights are offered a sandwich option, while those on longer flights have the price of a full meal included in the cost of their ticket.
The company offers an ever-changing menu of options, ranging from food prepared by an on-board chef on longer business class flights, to hot sandwiches and ciabattas for shorter distances.
Phil Shepherd, a spokesperson for the firm, said: "We do have a team of chefs who are involved in developing all the menus across all the classes and the emphasis is very much on trying to source the best ingredients and recognising that things do taste differently in the air than they do on the ground."
He added that the airline could accommodate specialist dietary requirements, but recommended informing the airline in advance of any specific requests, as only a limited number of meals can be taken on any single flight.
In April 2007, annual travel insurance provider the Post Officer reported that despite the rising value of the pound against the dollar, a meal out in Thailand, Egypt and South Africa can be a third of the price of that in the US for long-haul holidaymakers.
