03 February 2006 Compensation scrapped for duped travellers
Travellers will no longer be able to claim compensation if their holiday operator goes bust due to sweeping changes announced by the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta).
In a move which will place an increasing emphasis on the importance of travel insurance, Abta has decided to no longer protect holidaymakers from fraudulent tour operators due to the vast amounts of money that it has had to pay out in past years.
People planning on making numerous holidays in a year could be at risk of losing money if they do not have an annual travel insurance policy.
Arguing that Abta had been a victim of fraud on too many occasions, spokesman Paul Betton told Travel Mole: "Abta will no longer pay claims where the retailer fails having taken money without making a booking.
"We need to clearly communicate this," he added.
In 2005 alone Abta paid out £4 million following 20 failures. In each of these cases the travel agents took the money for the holiday without making the booking, leaving people without a holiday when the agent went bust, the Times reports.
Further changes made by Abta include the decision to allow online companies to join the association, recognising the growth of the internet in planning and booking holidays.
