06 August 2007 City break market 'to open up to Scandinavia and Balkans'
While the classic weekend destinations of Paris, Rome and Barcelona remain the most popular for Britons taking a city break, it has been forecast that holidaymakers are likely to take their short trips further afield in the future.
Online travel agent Holidays-Direct.co.uk also reports that the popularity of its varied locations will differ according to the time of year, with some holidaymakers opting to combine a city break and beach holiday in places like Malaga and Barcelona.
Neil Smillie, head of the company, said: "It is true to say that the world is getting smaller in terms of city breaks as customers continue to explore new places in shorter amounts of time."
He added that these destinations include cities in the US, the Balkans, Scandinavia and eastern Europe.
Earlier this year, Clydesdale Bank reported that 18 per cent of holidaymakers will substitute the classic two week summer break and instead opt for a number of mini-breaks, for which it may be prudent to purchase annual travel insurance.
