05 November 2005 China to become main tourism destination
China will soon be experiencing not just a growing population but also the largest number of tourists.
According to Xinhua, the World Tourism Organisation (WTO) has calculated that China will be the world's most popular tourist destination by 2020.
But news from the National Tourism Administration (NTA) has brought that date forward, with their calculations arguing that China will become the number tourist destination by 2017.
With news that China will receive 137 million overnight inbound tourists in 2020, travellers with the time and money may be wise to take advantage of their multi-trip travel insurance and go now to beat the crowds.
NTA deputy director Gu Chaoxi said: "China is forging ahead toward becoming a world tourism power.
"To go faster, it is imperative for China to build strong links between its rich tourism resources and affluent social capital."
For the first eight months of 2005, statistics show that 30.89 million tourists visited China, a rise of 15 per cent from the same period in 2004.
