18 June 2007 Buy travel insurance early, customers advised People that buy their travel insurance early are more likely to be compensated in the event of claim, research suggests.
According to data from Saga Travel Insurance, 68 per cent of those who have had a holiday cancelled - and bought their insurance well in advance of departure - make a successful claim, compared to 52 per cent of those buying it last minute.
And the research suggested almost one in five holidaymakers have had a trip cancelled prior to leaving.
Andrew Goodsell, chief executive of Saga Group, said: "This research clearly demonstrates the need to secure insurance well before you plan to travel, as the cover is in force from the date it's purchased, not just whilst you are actually away."
Common reasons for trips being cancelled were cited as illness and accidents among travellers, and family bereavements.
Last month, data from Swiftcover.com suggested over 20 per cent of British travellers have arrived at their destination to find their luggage has been lost.
