01 May 2007 Business travel 'still essential'
Despite the advent of technological advances including email and video conferencing, it has been claimed that travelling for work is still essential and provides effects that cannot be replicated through the use of modern telecommunications.
Recently published research from the Annual Barclaycard Business Travel Survey found that during 2006, 44 per cent of businesspeople travelled more than they did the previous year.
Furthermore, 79 per cent of those who have taken a business trip believe their work to have benefited from this travel, while three per cent believe the same positive results could have been realised without such journeys.
Denise Leleux, commercial director of issuing at Barclaycard Business, said: "It is clear that despite modern communications such as video conferencing, people still believe that travel is an essential part of business."
She added that businesspeople believe that travelling for business meetings remains an effective means of achieving success for their firm.
Last year, Barclays forecast the number of flights taken per business traveller, such as those with annual travel insurance, will increase to 8.5 by 2015.
