29 April 2006 Brits don't know how far to go The average Briton, who could opt for multi-trip travel insurance, is clueless as to the distances to overseas cities.
Despite Paris only being two hours away on the Eurostar, some Britons placed Paris 1,572 miles away from London instead of its actual distance of 213 miles.
This would put the French capital in North Africa, while cities that are actually located there, such as Marrakech, were thought to be over 10,000 miles away. "The research shows that Brits feel like an island nation more than ever before," said travel expert and TV presenter Ruth England.
"The ease with which travel can be arranged means that we simply don't stop to think how far we're actually travelling long or short haul I think it's clear to see most got it wrong here!"
The findings of the AirMiles research come despite 92 per cent of Britons having holidayed abroad, some armed with annual travel insurance.
However, the distances involved in these travels do not seem to have been considered and foreign destinations are placed far away, even though Paris is nearer to London than Newcastle is.
Most popular destinations such as New York or Sydney had their distances wildly overstated, suggesting that in addition to purchasing holiday insurance and medicines, travellers should prepare for their holidays by knowing just how far exactly they are going.
