23 August 2007 Britons 'prefer epic drives' to air travel
With increasing security measures at airports and risk of delays and costly annual travel insurance claims, it has been reported that - rather than boarding a plane - millions of Britons are opting to drive across the channel for their holidays.
Research from Zurich reveals that 9.2 million Britons will take a driving holiday in 2007, with 52 per cent citing convenience as the key reason for this decision.
Environmental concerns are the catalyst for 14 per cent of travellers, while 32 per cent do so because of costs and 16 per cent to avoid delays.
Roy Seeds, head of motor underwriting at the firm, said: "While it might not be top of the 'to do' list before a holiday we urge motorists to give their insurer a quick call before they go as this will help speed up any potential claims."
He also advised holidaymakers to plan regular stops on their travels and - if possible - share the driving responsibility, while also urging a revision of the road laws in their destination country.
Earlier this month, Cornhill Direct noted that three-quarters of Britons are apprehensive about driving in a foreign country.
